4 Easy To Remember Home Fire Safety Tips

Just about everyone lists home fire safety as one of their priorities. Sadly, not a lot of people follow up on this project. When you think about it, this is really an easy thing to do. You just have to follow a few things to achieve this goal. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1.    Always Have A Plan In Place
Most people already feel safe when surrounded with several fire fighting tools. On the other hand, you cannot afford to be complacent if you have no plan in place. An escape plan is perhaps the most important component of home fire safety. This lets your family know what to do in case a fire breaks out.

Of course, a plan is only good if you know how it should be implemented. In cases of emergency, there is not much time to think and react. Have a few practice drills with your family to get them used to it.

2.    Be Cautious Around Fires
A fire is a useful thing to have around the house. It is used to cook food and provide a source of light and heat during the cold months of winter. Once you start getting careless though, an accident is bound to happen. You want to be careful around open flames especially inside your home.

Keep flammable material such as old newspapers and curtains away from kitchen stoves and open furnaces. Failure to do so is like opening your door and inviting a disaster into your home.

3.    Check Fire Safety Equipment Regularly
If you already have a few fire safety equipment in store, then good for you. These are some of the most important things when it comes to fire prevention. Of course, you want to make sure that these will work when you need them. It is in your best interest then to inspect their condition.

Be sure to replace dead batteries on smoke detectors. Inspect your sprinkler system for any leaks. Check fire extinguishers for rust and decay. All these small things add up in the long run to ensure home fire safety.

4.    Determine Potential Fire Hazards
You may not it realize it but there are several fire hazards around your home right now. Identifying these hazards forms a crucial part of any fire prevention program. A quick glance around the house is not enough. You want to spot as much as possible so a thorough inspection is in order.

Start in areas most vulnerable to fires. The kitchen should take first priority. If you use your garage as storage space, you might want to consider looking there as well. Also, do not forget exterior spaces. Essentially, you should keep flammable materials away from any ignition source.

As you can see, these tips are pretty straightforward and can be done without much effort. These are also necessary if you take fire prevention seriously. These tips are also easy to follow so there really is no excuse for you not to do them. You will only thank yourself later.
